  • Show Times: Mixed Emotions Music

    Mondays 22:00 - 00:00

When did you begin DJ'ing and what made you start?

I began playing records and trying to mix at about the age of 14 (which was a long time ago!). A few friends had Technics turntables, so I would have a go whenever possible. I bought records I liked at the time, which varied from Soul, R&B, to Hardcore and Drum & Bass. I was a ‘Bedroom DJ’ for many years, just practicing and practicing.

What would you say influenced you towards House music?

I suppose it was the early UK House & Garage sound, circa 1994-95 that opened my ears to House Music, and record labels such as Nice’N’Ripe (and all sub-labels), Azuli, Strictly Rhythm, Positiva, AM:PM, and many more.

Of the many genres of House, which are your favourite?

For me, it has to be Deep and Soulful House (and I’m talking the original Deep House!), if you listen to my show, you’ll know I love vocal tracks, emotional music, with lyrics that people can relate to. That’s what my ‘M.E.M Mondays’ show and ‘Mixed Emotions’ series of mixes are all about.

Which artists, producers and tracks stand out for you, both now and from the past?

There are so many but, I’ll name a few vocalists and producers you’re likely to hear in my sets… Josh Milan, Stephanie Cooke, Sean McCabe, Louie Vega, Kerri Chandler, Darque, Monique Bingham, Julian Gomes, Ralf Gum, Frankie Feliciano, Tony Momrelle, Kenny Bobien, Atjazz, Rhemi, Black Coffee… I could be here all day!

Name some highlights or a profound moment in your time as a DJ

I wouldn’t say there was one profound moment, everytime I connect with a dance floor of party people is an amazing experience.

It’s unbelievable how much music can touch someone and I’ve met some great people through the music I play.

Have you done any production? If not, is it something you aim to do?

I haven’t done any as yet but, it’s definitely something I’ll be getting involved in very soon!

Going on from that, what are your musical plans for the future?

Obviously, getting into production is high on the agenda, releasing quality soulful house on a ‘Mixed Emotions Music’ imprint would be nice (that’s the dream anyway!). Other than that, I’ll be keeping up the ‘Mixed Emotions’ series of mixes and the ‘M.E.M Mondays’ radio show. I’m also looking to move my M.E.M party around a few London bars/clubs next year so look out for that!
